Calgary AB (Alberta) Wedding Photographer Peter Horwood provides exquisite Photo Journalistic wedding photography to customers in Calgary, Alberta and surrounding Rosarito Mexico and the world for his customers.
The Photojournalistic (or Photo Journalistic) style was most popular in the 1990's. It's key selling features are that it is "non-obtrusive" - it doesn't use any posing by the photographer, and it captures more spontaneous moments. It is all about catching many of the "moments" of a wedding, especially those not specifically planned or posed for. Those moments of pleasure, the tears of joy, the special interaction with family and friends and all the other emotions that manifest themselves on this special day.
Peter (Madman) agrees that this is a valuable style and he incorporates it heavily (ie lots of photos in this style) into every wedding he does.
In the 1990's this style came into major use. It became the buzz-word for wedding photographers. The problem with it, is that it misses out on the elegance of the traditional formal photos, and brides started to miss it. As one bride said "Yes, I saw (name of friend)'s wedding album - they were very nice - but they were missing all the high quality images". She, and many others, wanted, and liked the Photojournalistic images, but they wanted the traditional, and the high quality images of love that Peter captures with his Natural Love Style. They associate the photojournalistic style with a "lower quality" snap-shot style.
Peter believes that, properly done, the Photojournalistic style contains many very high quality images. But for many people (including Peter) when this is all there is, the overall impression is of lower quality and of missing important elements. But brought into a mix, included with the other styles that Peter brings you, the photojournalistic photographs are an important compenent of the overall picture, and when combined with the other styles, the photojournalistic photographs take on a much higher apparent quality. The special moments really are valuable and quality. Even if from a pure technical perspective they may not be "technically the highest quality" as a part of a whole they are very high quality moments captured in a wonderful way to treasure the rest of your life.
The major reason for photographers to stick with "only the photo journalistic style" is that it is easier for them. It costs them less and it consumes less hours during the wedding (no time alloted for the formal and natural love styles) as well as less hours before and, more important, after the wedding (less time producing your final proofs and images.) Photographers that do multiple weddings per weekend particularily like this style because it lets them book more weddings in the same time. Most of these photographers can do three or four weddings in the time (both taking the pictures as well as prep time and post wedding time) that it takes for a photographer that gives you the extra attention of combined styles.
In the 21st century, Brides in Peter's experience are looking at the "All the photos of the wedding are Photo Journalistic" as a bad idea of the 1990's. A swing from one side of a pendulum to the other. They want to keep the good parts of the style, but they don't want to be restricted to just this style any more than they wanted to be restricted to just the traditional formal style. Peter was including pictures in the photo journalistic style before it was "in style" and he is continuing to include them for your wedding as part of the overall experience. We'll keep the good of the photo journalistic, without throwing away the good of the traditional and the good of the Natural Love styles.
