Weddings By Madman. Your  Wedding Photographer.

Vote for us

Yes! You can have your engagement and wedding photography done by Peter as well.

For most weddings you will be provided with 4 styles of photography: The  Elegant Formal  the  Photo Journalistic  the  Natural Love Style tm and the Pure Fun. And of course we handle many  Unusual Wedding Choices.

As with our standard portrait package, you get to keep a copy of ALL the proofs. You don’t have to agonize over the proofs trying to decide which few you get to keep. And you will get to keep a LOT of prints – when Peter shoots your wedding, you will get dozens and dozens of prints. Many photographers (not all) will try to convince you that a limited number of pictures is better. We respectfully disagree. It takes several pictures before you and others get comfortable enough with the camera to give true expressions, and with the subtlety of human expressions, a large number of photos gives you the best chance of finding the pictures that bring tears of joy to your eyes. One popular wedding photo "course" says you should tell people that if you have lots of photos, you will be disappointed at having to reject so many great photos. Well, we have a different attitude - first, you get EVERY photo to keep forever so you don't have to eliminate ANY of them! And besides - wouldn't you rather pick from more photos than be forced to accept a more limited number? And yes, if your package includes enlargements or you decide you want enlargements later, you will have to choose which ones to blow up based on the space you have available and your budget. But again, we think it is far better to have the more difficult choice of deciding "which" ones, then the easy choice of accepting what you got - because there simply is no choice!

To put this into very practical terms. In early 2003 a bride that used Peter to do the photos had a relative get married. According to the bride, that relative decided to go with a photographer that was $200 cheaper, but when they got the proofs back, they received 3 (yes - only three) photos of the bride and groom alone. And this was supposedly a "professional" wedding photographer. Well, I guess technically the term "professional" means that they were paid money for their work, but this certainly is not professional quality.

We have several packages to fit most budgets. However, the packages are only guidelines, please feel free to request any deletions or additions that you would like – this is your day and Peter will be as flexible as possible to accommodate you. With any Wedding Photos by Madman packages, you will get all the “normal” poses, plus photos taken in the Photos By Madman Natural style.

To get all the details with no sales pressure, please contact Peter by your favorite method (email, phone, fax, mail), provide your mailing address and ask for the "Wedding info in the large envelope that tells the whole story" (actually, if you just say "Wedding info" that is enough to get the appropriate info.) And as always you won't be pestered or receive any high pressure sales. The most "pressure" you will receive is a courtesy call (or email if you prefer) to confirm whether you received the information. And if you don't want even that, just tell me in the email/phone/fax/letter and I will happily honor/honour your request.

If you want your wedding done in the Photos By Madman style, let me know as early as possible. As of this update (late spring 2004), there were no slots left for 2004 and only a few left in 2005.

With every package you'll get our list of suggestions customized for you to help achieve the best photographs on your wedding day.

FAQ: (Frequently asked questions -- and a few that have only been asked once or twice.)

What locations in the World do you do weddings?

The first area is in the Calgary area: approximately from Banff to Calgary to Drumheller to Reddeer. The cost of the wedding may vary slightly depending on the exact location.

The second area is around Rosarito Mexico (just a bit south of San Diego, California). The cost of the wedding may vary slightly if you are further than 50 miles from Rosarito, for example, if you are further North than Costa Mesa.

The third area is anywhere else in US, in Canada, in the World. If you like my style, I am willing to consider any location in the World. While the bulk are currently done in the above two locations,  I have done photo shoots in Papua New Guinea, Australia and Switzerland. See further notes below.

In all cases, ask to see if I am available in your area on your wedding date.

Is it true you will only do a limited number of weekend weddings per year and it is true there are no slots left in the 2002/2003 season?

Essentially, yes. I sometimes make allowances for summer weddings, but my limit is based on the fact that I have 4 children who are in school during the week. The weekends (Friday night to Sunday night) are my time with them. For this reason I strictly hold to this limit. I'm sorry but there are no slots left for the 2002/2003 season. I will update this page when the 2003/2004 season is fully booked (it is 3/4 booked as of this writing).

Why the different styles? Why not just use one style?

There are several good reasons. The first is that your wedding pictures are designed to last a lifetime. The Formal style has been popular for decades, for a decade the Photo Journalist style was "the" popular style. The Natural Love Style™ has been popular with Peter's customers for decades and having a few "just for fun" poses brings happy memories for decades to come. As people get older, their preferences often change - why not have a selection of all the popular styles? Instead of being limited to a few pictures in one style, Peter pefers to give lots of pictures in multiple sytles - it gives a Wedding by Madman a timeless value and beauty. I know many (most) photographers recommend going with one of the two predominant styles: Formal and Photojournalistic. Some will try to sell you on the timeless proven record of the traditional alone. Others will point to how popular the Photo Journalistic style has been. In contrast to most, Peter believes that both of these (and his third primary) styles are valuable for almost every wedding (even an unusual  wedding). Better photographers will add to their one (or two) styles, a fun photo or more but virtually none add the "Natural Love Style™" or anything like it. To summarize then, Peter provides three major styles, the Formal, the PhotoJournalistic and the Natural Love Style™ along with looking very hard for a few of the "just for fun" style photos because it provides a better record, timeless quality and better choices for you.

So why do most wedding photographers only provide one style?

There are several reasons that we have seen. One is that most of the "books" and training courses recommend picking one style and aggresively pursuining it. According to these training materials restricting the choices you are offered gives the photographer a higher profit margin and lowers by many hours the time the photographer has to spend before and after the wedding. (Peter chooses to do fewer weddings and instead commit the time before during and after the wedding - often for a lower total price - after the cost of enlargements is added.) Another reason given by the books "Your profit comes from the enlargements, not from shooting the wedding itself. The more choices you give people the longer they will take to decide, and that means you have to wait longer for your profit."

Another reason is inexperience. Obviously for most people, if they have a friend shoot the wedding, the friend may simply not have the experience. Even professional photographers may not have been around long enough to learn more than one style (look for ads in magazines that tell people how with a weekend course they can become a professional wedding photographer)

Another is training and practice. It is sad, but many photographers may have been around for decades, but never taken (found/made) the time to further their learning. Ask your photographer "How many books/magazines on photography have you read completely or mostly in the last 6 months? In the last 10 years? Ask how often they experiment for their own purposes. Peter has been doing photography for several decades, and Peter has for that whole time actively sought to improve and grow. He reads several photo magazines every month, an average of one photo book a month - and he has been doing this for years! He also takes regular opportunities to experiment and improve - regular means weekly or more often in most cases!

Are you absolutely strict on the # of hours in each package?

No. They are guidelines. Talk to people who have used me, you will see the goal is to make your special day special and as hassle free as possible.

Can I request special poses/groupings/etc.., and will it cost extra and is there any limit?

Yes you can request and I will be very flexible in trying to achieve the shot(s) you want. There is almost never an extra cost for these. The only time there will be extra cost is when there is an extra cost to me - for example, if you want to have a shot of you riding an old steam locomotive and you want me to pay to book it or there is a huge increase in time - 2 hours driving each way to get the picture on the locomotive! There is no preset limit to these special poses. If you ordered the Standard or Deluxe they will be done in addition to any that I was going to do. If you want a lot of special poses and you ordered the basic or budget package I will simply make adjustments in the other shots you are entitled to, but I will tell you in case you want to pay a little more to get them all. Although I am happy to accept these requests on the fly as we are doing the photos, but, for the ones you know in advance, let me know and I'll write it down on my sheets. This way we are not likely to forget them!

My budget is $X - can we do anything with you?  My budget is $X - between 2 of your packages, can I get a custom package with some of the higher package?

Sure! Within reason I can make any adjustments. Let me know your budget and what features of the package are most important to you. I will try to help you out.

I already booked a photographer but he is sick and my wedding is today, can you help?

Phone me - this is not the time to use email! Let me know where, when and what your budget is. I will try to help you solve your problem. If I say "yes" - I will NOT charge extra for the "rush" (you've got enough stress for one day<g>). When you phone, we can discuss your priorities and how to fit that into your budget. If your budget is limited, we can prioritize the what shots to take today and worry later about what package of prints, albums etc.., you will want to receive. Plan on making a payment today when I arrive at the Church or first meet with you before the Church. (This will be the same payment others would have to make up to and including their wedding day, nothing extra).

My sister and I are getting married the same day in the same church. Can we get a discount by combining your services for both of us?

Yes! email, phone or visit me and we can discuss the options that the two of you would be happy with.

We have x children getting married over the next few months. Can we get a discount if we book all of them at the same time?

Yes.

Will you travel outside of Alberta, Mexico and Southern California?

Yes. As above, I have travelled to various continents and islands and I’d be happy to consider these and other locations. Talk to me about times, possibilities and costs. To be fair however, I realize that most people outside of my main geographical areas would prefer the lower cost option of using a local photographer. But for those that like my style enough to get me to a different location, I have in the past and I continue to do so and I'll do my best to make it fit in your budget (I travel cheap - I have no personal need to travel 1st class and I prefer "local" food opportunities.) If there is something unusual about your location I may be willing to lower my costs somewhat in exchange for rights to use your photos for marketing and other purposes - so talk to me and lets see if we can work out an arrangement that we'd both be happy with.

I booked a package, a friend wants to pay to upgrade it as their wedding gift to us, what does that cost? Or, a friend is paying for a Budget/Basic/Standard package as our wedding gift and I would like to upgrade it, can I?

If Peter is available for the extra time required then the cost is simply the difference between the package you have ordered and the package they are upgrading you to.  Have them contact us as soon as possible so that we can try to accommodate the request.

I booked a package, a friend wants to pay $x to upgrade as their wedding gift but it isn’t enough to upgrade to the next package, can we do this?

Yes, You will receive a gift certificate for any services up to the dollar amount of the gift. You can use that as you see fit. If you want to “make up the difference” to upgrade to another package, that is fine. If you want to use them for reprints and/or mats and/or other products or services, that is fine too! Since this is paid in advance, you get the full value – the GST is deducted from the total cost.

Can other people take pictures while you are taking them?

I leave this up to you! Most photographers don't let you because they want to sell expensive reprints and enlargements. But to be fair, having other people take pictures at the same time can make it more difficult or take a lot longer to get all the pictures you want. Some shots will also be missed because people will be looking at the wrong camera. The same problem occurs when there are people moving around behind my cameras - you or others in your wedding party may be watching them and that can ruin some pictures. Also, when doing studio work, their cameras may set off my flashes meaning that their shots will be ruined (too much light) and some of mine may not work (too little light because the flash wasn't recharged yet.) What many people do is this: Let people take photos during the procession and recession but ask that "Flash photos not be taken during the ceremony except by the professional photographer hired by the couple."  Where the "formal" pictures are taken (park or wherever) perhaps give people some time up front to take the pictures they want, then ask them to cease until we are done. You may decide even to allow people initially and then ask them to stop if/when it becomes a nuisance. During the cake cutting, I suggest that you let me set you up and take initial pictures, then let everyone else take their pictures before you leave the cake.

Can we?

If you have other requests, you will find I am fairly easy to get along with and I try to be as flexible and fair as possible. As always, you can ask and I will never use  high-pressure sales to get you to accept what I offer. I enjoy life, I enjoy my work and I like working on a friendly basis with people. I realize that I may be able to make more money if I didn't, but I have built and sold several companies and can truly state that I became friends with most of my clients and suppliers. And when we couldn't do business because I or they were too expensive, we could be honest with each other and stay friends. This is because "too expensive" usually means that "it just isn't worth the cost to me." I can accept that and the people I work with do too. So. Ask what you'd like, if it isn't worth the cost to you - that's OK! I won't try to change your mind and I won't be offended in the least.

Why do you use both the International and US spellings (like honor/honour)?

Mostly out of courtesy to my customers. Much of my business comes from the US, but I live in Canada and have worked in various places around the world. I choose to try to be courteous to all my clients.

What are the buttons (like Top Wedding Sites, Web Wedding.com and Web Ring) for?

First of all, clicking the "Top Wedding Sites" button is the only one that "benefits" us. When you click it the first time, we are given a higher scoring with them which means we show up higher in their links. The other sites do not track whether you came from us so there is NO benefit to us by having you click on them. Now that we have disclosed this value to us (and hopefully you will press the "Top Wedding Sites" button for us<g>), lets look at the benefits to you: When you are planning your wedding, there are many services you will be looking for. All these links provide links to a variety of services. Some compete directly with us, most are complimentary. As far as the ones that compete directly with us, we feel that we provide a unique premium service. If you like our style and like our value, visiting our competitors will just convince you that you want to go with Photos By Madman. If you hate our style and what we value is not what you value, then it is in your best interests for us to give you links to other options. And ... If you decide to go with a different photograhic solution from these links - feel free to "thank" us by pressing the "Top Wedding Sites" button<g>. Note: Our experience with sites like this is that the sites to RELATED services are legitimate, but the popup advertising saying things like "Congradulations you are the 1000,000th visiter" are bogus. If you just click on Top Wedding Sites, it votes but does not take you into the full site.

Supporting a family....

Did you hear about the prospective father-in-law who asked "Young man, can you support a family?" The surprised groom-to-be replied "Well, no. I was just planning to support your daughter. The rest of you will have to fend for yourselves."
